The Concerned Christian Youth Forum (CCYF) has strongly condemned the recent wave of killings in Benue State, particularly the gruesome attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the group decried what it described as the “systematic extermination of innocent civilians” and called on youths across the state to rise up in defence of their ancestral lands.
Signed by its Convener, James Paul Adama, the statement portrayed a picture of mounting frustration and anguish among Benue’s youth population in the face of ongoing bloodshed.
“The blood of our brothers and sisters cries out from the ground, and their cries are a deafening condemnation of the inaction and indifference of those in positions of power who have failed to end this carnage,” the group said.
The CCYF lamented what it sees as a continued failure by government authorities to protect the lives and properties of Benue citizens, and advocated self-defence as a necessary response to the deteriorating security situation.
“We urge the youths of the state to rise up without delay and defend themselves and their ancestral lands with every ounce of their strength and determination,” the forum charged.
Calling for unity among Benue’s political leaders, the youth body stressed that party differences must be set aside to confront the existential threat posed by insecurity.
“No political goal is worth sacrificing the lives of your people. You must set aside your differences and focus on the task at hand: securing a peaceful and prosperous future for your state,” the statement added.
The forum also expressed solidarity with families affected by the latest attack, offered prayers for grieving communities, and urged security operatives to intensify efforts in tracking down and prosecuting the perpetrators.
“We stand in solidarity with the people of Benue State. Justice must not only be done — it must be seen to be done.”
Reaffirming its commitment to advocating for the protection of vulnerable communities, the CCYF called on all Nigerians to speak up and take a stand against violence, wherever it occurs.
