Pro-Democracy Coalition Roundtable Condemns Violence, Commends Nigeria Police Force’s Professionalism

A coalition of pro-democracy organizations today convened a roundtable in Abuja to address the aftermath of recent nationwide protests that swept through several parts of Nigeria. The discussions, which brought together civil society groups, led by the Campaign for Democracy (CD), youth leaders, and human rights activists, focused on the violence that marred protests in some regions, particularly in Kano and Kaduna states.

In a strongly worded statement issued at the conclusion of the roundtable, and signed by Comrade Johnson Oluwatobi and Usman Danlami, the coalition condemned the violence that erupted during the protests in some parts of the country. The coalition called for peaceful expressions of grievances, emphasizing that violence undermines the very essence of democracy and the rule of law.

The coalition also took the opportunity to commend the professionalism displayed by the Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, during the protests in August. According to the statement, the disciplined and measured approach of the police helped to mitigate potential escalation of the situation and ensured the safety of citizens and property.

Furthermore, the coalition lauded the recently held National Youth Summit, convened by the Nigeria Police Force, describing it as unprecedented and a significant step towards promoting peace and addressing insecurity in the country. The summit, which brought together young people from diverse backgrounds, was hailed as a major initiative in fostering dialogue and understanding among the nation’s youth.

The coalition urged the Nigeria Police Force to deepen its engagement with citizens by organizing similar interactive sessions with civil society and other critical stakeholders. The groups emphasized that such engagements would help consolidate the IGP's commitment to building a cordial relationship between the police and law-abiding Nigerians.

In closing, the coalition passed a vote of confidence on IGP Kayode Egbetokun and the current management team of the Nigeria Police Force, expressing optimism that the ongoing reforms and initiatives under their leadership would contribute significantly to national peace and security.
