*Gov Diri Urges Aspirants to Prioritise Bayelsa Interest
Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, will on Thursday inaugurate the bridge and road linking the New Yenagoa City at Onopa in the state capital.
The inauguration of the projects is in continuation of activities marking the second anniversary of the Governor Douye Diri administration, which commenced in February.
Governor Diri disclosed this on Wednesday during the 70th state executive council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that the project was started by his predecessor and completed by his administration.
He explained that it was slated for inauguration during the anniversary celebrations but it was shifted at the instance of his Sokoto counterpart.
He promised that more of such projects would be inaugurated as they are completed.
Meanwhile, Governor Diri has called on those aspiring for elective positions to desist from activities that are inimical to the peace and development of the state as they go about politicking.
According to him, those seeking political offices in order to serve the people should put the interest of the state above their personal ambitions.
The Bayelsa helmsman restated his call on his appointees interested in elective positions to resign in accordance with the law and in order not to distract the pace of governance in the state.
Diri also thanked Bayelsans for their support, noting that the prevailing peace was being acknowledged by those interested in investing in the state.
He said: “Again, let me advise all those interested in political office to be circumspect and to first of all think of Bayelsa. The interest of the state should supersede the ambition of anyone. If your interest is to serve the state, let us not do anything that will rock the peace that we have in Bayelsa.
"Whichever political party that you belong to, what should be uppermost in your minds should be the peace, unity and development of Bayelsa State. That is the only way we will continue to live as a people. So, Bayelsans can attract non-Bayelsans and non-Ijaws towards the development of our state.
"Let me restate for the umpteenth time that any appointee that has the ambition to contest for the state or national assembly election should send in his resignation letter.
There are rules guiding that contest, one of which is that you have to resign.
“For the stability of this government, and because we want to give service, we want those who will be committed in performing their duties at all times.
“It is very honourable for anyone interested in political office to act according to the law and resign. It is the right of anyone to contest, and this government would not stop anyone. But the contest has to be according to the rules and regulations binding our party and the conduct of elections in Nigeria.
"Part of what is selling for Bayelsa State is the peace and security of the state. Proposed investors have also known that within Nigeria, Bayelsa is one of the safest states for their capital investment. Let us therefore sustain the team work and the peace."
While thanking members of the state executive council for their collaboration and commitment, which resulted in the achievements recorded within two years of the administration, he called on them to be more focused and committed to deliver more to the people.
"We still have work to do. We have two years to render service to our people and country. Please let us not be too distracted by the atmosphere in the state. Let us realise that we have service to deliver in our ministries, department and agencies. Let us work the way we did and received the applause.
"I acknowledge the
team work. For us as members of the executive council, we owe it as a duty to render service not only to ourselves but to the people of our state."
