Renowned Nigerian athletics official, Omatseye Oscar Nesiama, has been selected to participate in the prestigious Referees Mentoring Programme organised by World Athletics in collaboration with the Confederation of African Athletics.
The programme is scheduled to hold alongside the African Championships in Accra and is aimed at strengthening the capacity and professional development of Technical Officials across the continent through practical experience, educational sessions, and hands-on mentoring during a major continental athletics competition.
In a formal invitation signed by Stephane Merlino, World Athletics confirmed that the organisation will sponsor Omatseye Oscar Nesiama’s international flight ticket, while the Confederation of African Athletics will provide accommodation throughout the duration of the programme from May 10 to May 19, 2026.
The initiative will also feature the appointment of a Gold Referee with vast experience in competition organisation to mentor participants and provide expert guidance on competition preparation and delivery.
As part of the programme, participants will actively engage in officiating activities during the African Championships, attend specialised mentoring and educational sessions, and interact with experienced officials and fellow referees from across Africa.
The invitation is seen as a significant recognition of Omatseye Oscar Nesiama’s growing profile and contribution to athletics officiating, while also highlighting Nigeria’s continued presence in continental sports development programmes.
