Following the incident, the Commandant General of the Corps, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, OFR, mni, ordered the immediate constitution of the investigative team to unravel the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The team, which is led by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation, has been mandated to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

According to the Corps, the investigation will cover the condition of the suspects at the time of arrest, the duration and conditions of their detention, medical attention provided while in custody, and other relevant circumstances.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination to determine the actual cause of death.

The NSCDC said it is also collaborating with relevant health authorities and sister security agencies to ensure appropriate medical and public health measures are taken.

The Corps clarified that reports linking the deaths to any specific disease are yet to be medically and scientifically confirmed, noting that it would refrain from speculation until the outcome of the medical examination.

The Commandant General further directed that the health and welfare of all persons currently in custody be given utmost priority, while necessary protective measures should be taken for personnel who may have had contact with the deceased.

The NSCDC extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and addressed based on established facts.

The Corps reiterated its commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting critical national assets, while upholding the dignity, safety and fundamental rights of all persons in its custody.

It urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigative and medical processes to run their course, assuring that further updates would be provided as verified information becomes available.

The statement was issued on September 17, 2026, by Assistant Commandant of Corps, Babawale Afolabi, ANIPR, National Public Relations Officer, NSCDC National Headquarters, Abuja.
