The chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has assured Nigerians in the diaspora that the Federal Government’s ongoing fiscal and tax reforms are investor-friendly and protective, not punitive.
Oyedele gave the assurance during a joint virtual meeting with the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, aimed at dispelling misinformation about the impact of the reforms on Nigerians living abroad. He said the reforms are people-centric, growth-focused, and efficiency-driven, adding that they would introduce several incentives, including tax holidays, lower withholding tax (WHT) rates, higher exemption thresholds for small businesses, and the elimination of taxes on investment and capital gains.
“There’s no need for panic. Monies sent to Nigeria will not be taxed. “We’re introducing measures that promote ease of doing business, ensure trade balance, harmonise taxes, and make Nigeria an attractive destination for investment,” Oyedele clarified.
He noted that concerns about double taxation, non-resident taxation, and the impact on real estate investments were being fully addressed, emphasising that no new taxes would be imposed on diaspora income. Speaking, Dabiri-Erewa stressed that Nigerians abroad remain key contributors to national development and deserve clear communication on how the new fiscal and tax reforms, scheduled to take effect in January 2026, will affect them.
“Our diaspora community is strategic to Nigeria’s growth. It’s important they are properly informed about policies that affect them,” she said.
