*Federal High Court Launches E-Filing Platform in Lagos, Ends Era of Manual Case Filing*

The Federal High Court of Nigeria on Monday, April 27, 2026, officially launched its electronic filing (e-filing) platform in the Lagos Judicial Division, marking a significant shift from the long-standing manual filing system to a fully digital process.

The landmark event, attended by judicial officers, legal practitioners, and key stakeholders in the justice sector, signals a new phase in Nigeria’s judicial administration aimed at improving efficiency and transparency.

Speaking at the go-live ceremony, the Chief Judge of the court, Justice John T. Tsoho, described the initiative as more than a technological upgrade, noting that it represents a fundamental transformation of the judicial process.

According to him, the deployment of the e-filing system will eliminate longstanding bottlenecks associated with manual filing, including delays, loss, and tampering of court documents.

“We are not just installing software; we are dismantling the barriers that have historically slowed the wheels of justice,” Tsoho said, adding that the transition to a digital ecosystem is now a necessity for Nigeria’s legal system.

He explained that the new platform creates a digital footprint for all court processes, thereby preventing backdating of filings and eliminating informal practices that previously hindered access to justice.

Under the new system, court registries will no longer be constrained by traditional working hours, as litigants can file cases remotely from any location with internet access. Filing fees will also be processed through integrated electronic payment systems to ensure accountability and transparency in revenue collection.

“The time for a file to reach a judge’s desk has been reduced from days to seconds,” the Chief Judge stated, urging legal practitioners to adopt digital signatures, seals, and the e-affidavit platform to ensure seamless and fully digital documentation.

In his keynote address, the Chief Judge of Borno State, Justice Kashim Zannah, highlighted the benefits of early adoption of e-filing, noting that Borno State introduced the system in 2020 with significant positive outcomes.

Zannah, who also chairs the Judicial Information Technology and Policy Committee, cited a recent flood disaster in Maiduguri as a critical test of the system’s resilience. He revealed that despite extensive damage to physical court infrastructure, no judicial records were lost due to cloud-based storage.

“All the registries were flooded and destroyed, yet we did not lose a single case document because they were safely stored in the cloud,” he said, adding that legal processes continued uninterrupted despite the disaster.

He noted that states such as Borno, Bayelsa, Delta, Niger, and Taraba have already embraced digital filing systems, and urged others, including Ekiti, Ebonyi, and Ogun, to follow suit.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), represented by the Chairman of its Surulere Branch, Mr. Anene Nwadukwu, expressed strong support for the initiative. He emphasized that embracing technology is essential to sustaining Lagos’ reputation as a hub for legal excellence.

Chairmen of NBA branches in Ikeja, Lagos, and Ikorodu also commended the Federal High Court for the initiative, describing it as a timely development that will modernize legal practice and enhance service delivery within the judiciary.

The launch of the e-filing platform is widely seen as a major step toward digitizing Nigeria’s justice system and improving access, efficiency, and accountability in court processes.
