Former Senator Shehu Sani has strongly opposed the decision to rename the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC) after President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu . In a public statement, Sani urged the president to decline the honour, stating that such monuments should not be politicized or renamed without regard for historical context.
Sani emphasized that the ICC was built under the leadership of former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida and has served as a symbol of Nigeria\'s unity and diplomatic engagement. According to him, changing its name would amount to erasing a significant part of Nigeria\'s national history.
He added that while it is appropriate to honour national leaders, such recognition should be reserved for new projects or initiatives spearheaded by those being celebrated. “The ICC should remain as it is—a legacy of its time and builder,” Sani said.
